With Heart House, families can stay together until they return to full self-sufficiency.

Heart House

It’s the same Neighborhood Center, but with a new way to change lives: Heart House.

Emergency housing for families with children is a desperate need today in our community. Since 1970, The Neighborhood Center has provided food, assistance with rent and utilities, shelter, referrals, and counseling services.

The Neighborhood Center continues to make a difference in families’ lives. In 2011, a nearby property became available that, with renovation, has become emergency housing for multiple families in 2013. The Neighborhood Center purchased the property, and has been transformed into a much-needed shelter for children and their parents: The Heart House. The Heart House is the only emergency family housing on the west side of Volusia County. The home is at 114 W. Walts Ave., near the Neighborhood Center.

Who lives at Heart House?

The Heart House is open to single- and two-parent families. The Heart House’s four apartments and the families’ success plans — created with guidance from Neighborhood Center counselors — will make it possible for The Heart House to help as many as a dozen families per year. The first families are now living at Heart House (as of Oct. 2013).

How does Heart House help families renew their independence?

Like all Neighborhood Center housing initiatives, Heart House offers a hand-up, not a hand-out. The emergency housing it provides, in a safe and secure place with a play area and parking, allows families the necessary privacy to care for their children with dignity and respect. Its downtown DeLand location is near grocery stores, the library, public transportation and The Neighborhood Center.

The Heart House is our chance to make a difference for children and parents in Volusia County.

How can you help?

The Neighborhood Center has an overall fundraising goal of $200,000 for the Heart House project. We already have the funds which enabled purchase of the property and a start on renovations. We now need funds to provide for the first two years of operational expenses.

By giving today to support The Heart House project, you are supporting a cause that already has been endorsed by the community as a worthwhile and viable initiative.

No gift to The Heart House project is too small. From small donations of a few dollars to Platinum levels of $10,000+, to in-kind donations as a Sponsor of The Neighborhood Center’s Heart House, there are many ways you can help.

Become a donor at these levels: Friend: $5 – $99 • Associate: $100 – $499 • Bronze: $500 – $999
