The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia to open more beds for West Volusia’s homeless on December 15

Housing for the homeless will continue its unstoppable expansion in West Volusia County on Saturday, Dec. 15. The morning will be marked by a 9 a.m. ribbon-cutting for Home Grant House, 417 S. Palmetto Ave., DeLand. The public is welcome to attend.

Join us on Saturday as we expand housing for the homeless in West Volusia with the Home Grant House.

Home Grant House will provide housing for five adults who are transitioning from emergency housing with the goal of permanent housing and independence. The home has five bedrooms and baths with a communal cooking and eating area.

Home Grant House was purchased and renovated by Volusia County Council funds. The renovation was completed this fall by the City of DeLand. Renovations included interior and exterior repairs, complete reconstruction of walls, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, kitchen and finishes. Work also included a fire suppression and alarm system and lead paint abatement.

The City of DeLand also constructed a new water main on Palmetto Avenue to serve Home Grant House, The Neighborhood Center Thrift Store conversion, and the proposed “Bridge” project: a 20-bed, 5,000-square-foot shelter and day center. The Bridge will be constructed by the City of DeLand and managed by The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia. Construction will begin in early 2019.

The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia, 434 S. Woodland Blvd., is the area’s leader in housing the formerly homeless, and thus far in 2018 has provided transitional and emergency housing services to 583 residents. The new 5-bed Home Grant House brings the number of West Volusia beds available for emergency and transitional housing to 167. Further, thus far in 2018, 92 formerly homeless households found homes through The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia’s programs. These include 20 housed in Community Housing Development Organization units, 15 housed in Neighborhood Stabilization unites and 57 housed in Housing and Urban Development units.

GAP (Growth and Achievement Program) House will bring an additional 12 beds to West Volusia, thus increasing the agency’s total bed capacity (emergency and transition) to 162. The beds are earmarked for men in transition or at risk of homelessness.

Residents of GAP House must have income, pay $100 rent per week, and be in process of transitioning to permanent supportive housing or independent housing.

Rent includes utilities, water and food.

Residents can stay in GAP House for no longer than 12 months. #lovelocal

Neighborhood Center to Cut Ribbon July 18 for 12-Bed Transitional Housing

The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia will cut the ribbon on its newest transitional housing facility at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 18. City of DeLand officials and Neighborhood Center staff, donors and volunteers will be present. The public is invited to attend.

GAP (Growth and Achievement Program) House will bring an additional 12 beds to West Volusia, thus increasing the agency’s total bed capacity (emergency and transition) to 162. The beds, which will be housed in the former thrift shop behind The Neighborhood Center at 434 S. Woodland Blvd., are earmarked for men in transition or at risk of homelessness. Residents of GAP House must have income, pay $100 rent per week, and be in process of transitioning to permanent supportive housing or independent housing. Rent includes utilities, water and food. Residents can stay in GAP House for no longer than 12 months.

GAP House will be an option for residents who successfully progress from The Bridge, too. The Bridge is a planned 20-bed, 5,000-square-foot shelter and day center at 224 S. Florida Avenue. Construction on The Bridge begins next year.

“GAP House is another piece of the puzzle that will help eliminate homelessness in our community,” said Executive Director Susan Clark. “As we plan with the City of DeLand to build and manage The Bridge, we see GAP House as a place for clients to integrate into after their successful experience at The Bridge. The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia remains committed to being the leader in providing the continuum of care necessary to respond to West Volusia’s transitional housing needs.”

GAP House’s lead contractor is JMS Building Corporation; the renovation and remodeling project has cost $225,000. The Lacey Family Foundation donated $40,000 in support of the project and other donors supplied the balance. Construction of GAP House has been supported entirely by private donations.

Former Thrift Shop to be converted to housing

We are excited to be rolling into the second phase of our Thrift Shop expansion project: Converting the former space into transitional housing. Transitional housing is for adults and families who need a safe place to stay while issues that forced them into homelessness are resolved.

The renovation will include 14 new beds, a living area, back porch area, and kitchen and shower spaces. Contractors also will add a newly paved, lighted parking lot in the rear of the building, too.

The Neighborhood Center has entered an agreement with JMS contractors for the renovation work, which is scheduled to begin in early September.

Want a fun fact? The addition of the 14 beds will make The Neighborhood Center the largest nonprofit housing agency in Volusia County.
